What got you into dentistry?

I never really thought I would be a dentist. What got me into dentistry was working as a dental assistant while going to college to be a pre-med student. But I found it boring, so I found fun in the dental office. My doctor was hilarious, we never had a patient that died, and most of it was because he made people laugh and relaxed them. I thought that this would be me.

How important is uplifting patients in your practice?

I don't have a predetermined plan to uplift a patient. When I meet them, I assess their state. Sometimes they're in pain. I engage them and ask why they're here and how I can help. I don't want them to sit here longer than necessary. Sometimes it's making them laugh, sometimes I numb them just to talk to them because they don't really feel pain once they get relaxed. It really depends because this is a fearful environment. Nobody wants to be at the dentist. So, I try to read my patients and engage based on their needs. I also respect their time and try not to keep them longer than necessary.

What are some things that you do to mitigate pain with patients who really don't like going to the dentist?

For patients to not be in pain, I have to ensure that I don't talk to them while they're in pain. So the first thing I do is I ask them, how bad is their pain on a scale of zero to 10? If they tell me a 10, I numb them and then give them a few minutes to relax before engaging them again. Sometimes that fear could be the fear of needles. So, I find out what it is and then start talking to them to understand what brought them in. If they're not in pain and they can talk, then I sit down, level with them, and listen.

How do you address needle fear in your practice?

We have different techniques to address needle fear. We use different distractors and I personally buy the most expensive topical anesthetic. It's a little bit of gel that numbs the tissue and I leave it in the mouth for at least five minutes. This way, the patients don't even feel the needle prick. Most dentists don't have time for this step, but in my practice, my assistants place it in the right place and we give the patient enough time for the topical anesthetic to take effect.

Why is it important for patients to visit the dentist regularly?

My message to patients who haven't gone to the dentist is: what are you waiting for? Are you waiting to lose your teeth? Are you waiting to get old? Are you waiting to die early? Are you waiting to pass periodontal disease to your children when you kiss them? There's a lot of risks associated with not regularly visiting the dentist. So my advice is, find a dentist that you trust and let them help you. Do not wait.

Can you talk about the links between dental health and systemic conditions?

There are many studies showing links between dental health and systemic conditions. While I am not good with statistics, I do like to read up on these studies. There's a lot of links right now coming from periodontal disease, mainly bad gums, bleeding gums, and bacteria that affects your blood and makes you sick. I encourage everyone to read up on these studies and understand the importance of regular dental check-ups.

Finding the right dentist in Manchester, MO means choosing a dental team that can support your smile through every stage of life. At Ballwin Dental Care, we welcome patients from Manchester and the surrounding communities who are looking for personalized, comprehensive dentistry close to home.

Our approach goes beyond simply treating dental problems when they occur. We focus on prevention, early diagnosis and long-term oral health while also providing restorative and cosmetic solutions when your smile needs additional care. From routine dental cleanings and X-rays to dental implants, crowns, veneers and emergency appointments, our team offers a wide range of services in one convenient location.

Preventive Dentistry

Preventive care is one of the most important parts of maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Regular dental visits allow our team to monitor changes in your oral health and identify potential concerns before they develop into more complicated problems.

Our preventive dentistry services include routine examinations, dental cleanings, dental hygiene care, dental X-rays, fluoride treatments and dental sealants. We also pay close attention to gum health, as healthy gums provide the foundation for a healthy smile.

Professional dental cleanings remove plaque and tartar from areas that can be difficult to reach effectively at home. Digital dental X-rays can provide additional information about your teeth, roots and supporting structures, helping us identify issues that may not be visible during a standard examination.

Patients looking for a dentist near Manchester, MO can visit us for ongoing preventive care designed around their individual needs.

Family and General Dentistry

Our general and family dentistry services are designed to make ongoing dental care straightforward and convenient. Whether you are due for a routine examination, need help maintaining healthy gums or have a specific concern about a tooth, we can assess your oral health and recommend appropriate treatment.

By establishing regular dental visits, we can get to know your dental history and monitor your smile over time. This is particularly valuable for families who want a dental practice capable of addressing a broad range of everyday oral health needs.

Restorative Dentistry

Damaged, decayed or missing teeth can affect much more than the appearance of your smile. They can make eating uncomfortable, change the way your teeth come together and potentially affect surrounding teeth.

Our restorative dentistry options include tooth-colored fillings, dental crowns, bridges, dentures and dental implants.

Tooth-colored fillings provide a natural-looking way to repair teeth affected by decay. For teeth requiring additional protection, a dental crown can cover and strengthen the existing tooth. Bridges and dentures provide different solutions for replacing missing teeth, while dental implants can provide a durable tooth-replacement option designed to closely replicate the function and appearance of natural teeth.

Our goal is to recommend treatment based on the condition of your teeth and your individual needs rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.

Dental Implants

If you have lost one or more teeth, dental implants may provide a stable, long-term solution. An implant replaces the missing tooth root and supports a restoration designed to look and function naturally.

Replacing missing teeth can help restore your ability to bite and chew comfortably while also improving the appearance of your smile. During your consultation, our dental team can assess your oral health and discuss whether implant treatment may be appropriate for you.

Cosmetic Dentistry

If there are things you would like to change about your smile, cosmetic dentistry provides several possibilities. Treatment can address concerns such as discoloration, chips, uneven teeth, minor imperfections and other aesthetic issues.

Our cosmetic services include professional teeth whitening, dental bonding, porcelain veneers and smile makeovers.

Professional whitening can brighten teeth affected by staining and discoloration, while bonding can make subtle improvements to the shape and appearance of individual teeth. Veneers offer another option for changing characteristics such as tooth color, size, shape and symmetry.

For patients interested in making several changes, a smile makeover can combine appropriate cosmetic and restorative treatments into a personalized treatment plan..

Emergency Dentist in Manchester, MO

A dental problem doesn't always happen at a convenient time. Severe toothaches, broken or damaged teeth, dental infections and other unexpected problems may require prompt professional attention.

If you need an emergency dentist near Manchester, MO, contact our office as soon as possible. We will assess the situation and advise you on the appropriate next steps, with the goal of relieving discomfort and protecting your oral health.

TMJ Treatment

Jaw discomfort, headaches, facial soreness and problems opening or closing the mouth can sometimes be associated with the temporomandibular joints (TMJ). We can evaluate symptoms associated with TMD/TMJ and recommend appropriate treatment based on the underlying problem.

We also provide night guards where appropriate. A custom dental night guard can help protect the teeth from damage associated with nighttime grinding or clenching

Modern Dental Technology

Accurate diagnosis plays an important role in providing effective dental treatment. Our practice uses modern dental technology, including dental X-rays, to help us evaluate areas that cannot always be assessed through a visual examination alone.

Technology supports our wider approach to dentistry: identify concerns accurately, explain your options clearly and recommend treatment based on what is right for your individual smile.
